CUSTOMIZATION GETS LAMP MANUFACTURER’S NAME IN LIGHTS
Online Customizing Attracts National Exposure

So you’re redecorating your house, and you can’t find any lighting that fits your décor. What do you do? If you’re Friday Shamblen, you start your own business. In 2002, Shamblen began Alluminare, a company that makes custom lamps. Alluminare gets most of its customers through its website. But lately it’s been getting noticed by some big names. Its lamps have recently been featured in Essence Magazine and on HGTV’s hit show Mission:Organization. They’ve even gotten attention from Martha Stewart Living. The secret? Online customization.

Alluminare allows its customers to design everything about their lamps, including size, shape, color and material, through its website. And if you’re not sure which shape and size lamp to use, they’ve even got an online advice tool. Customers can plug in the shape of their dining room table, room size, ceiling height, even whether the room is separate or open to the rest of the house, and the tool will suggest sizes, shapes and styles that may look good.

Alluminare’s web presence was established in the summer of 2004, and it has already brought the company high-profile attention. When she needed a lighting vendor for a project on HGTV’s Mission: Organization, Monica Ricci of Catalyst Organizing looked online-and found Alluminare. A professional organizer, Ricci had the task of completely redesigning a disorganized couple’s loft apartment. She picked Alluminare for new lighting because they let her design exactly the lamp she wanted. “I came in with an idea of the space I had to work with and left with everything taken care of,” Ricci says.

The website also attracted the attention of Essence Magazine. The editor was looking for a vendor who could deliver a “designer look for less,” and found Alluminare as most of their customers do-online. “They contacted us for some stocked items,” Shamblen says, “But when they found out they could design what they needed and we would ship to them, they were very happy and were able to specify the pendant shown.”

The editor for Martha Stewart Weddings found Alluminare online as well, and worked with the company to customize lamp designs for a summer photo shoot.

Alluminare was founded in 2002 and creates custom lamps for home, office and retail settings. They can be found online at www.alluminare.com.
